Despite restrictions on the gathering of large crowds, this final month of 2020 may just be a portent for better times. With a vaccine on the way, more experts are now more positive regarding the idea of attending a festival next year.

We can't yet meet in the large physical community, but together we can hope for a summer that will once again offer overwhelming musical experiences, engaging contemporary art and activism that reflects on the society and everyday life we share.

CEO of Roskilde Festival, Signe Lopdrup, says:

"It is a basic human need to gather and take part in large, cultural communities. We need to believe that we can once again step into a free space and let ourselves be led by the many new impressions that Roskilde Festival offers."

"With the most recent knowledge, it seems closer than it has been for a long time. The whole live industry has worked intensely together with health professionals. So, when we announce new acts today, it is because we feel a new and cautious optimism about being able to conduct a festival this summer. That's why we want to communicate that there is something to look forward to. Now we must stand together if we are to move past the dark times we are in, and it certainly helps the unity that we have something to look forward to."

Different sides of rock music
Among the headliners in today's announcement, we find several bands representing different sides of rock music. New Yorker band The Strokes will return to the Orange Stage with new material, and sibling trio HAIM revisit the festival with their new album Women In Music Part III, which attacks the sexism they believe permeates the music industry.

In the harder end of the spectrum you will find the genre-bending metal band Faith No More, and the Sacramento metal heroes Deftones return to Roskilde with their new album Ohms.

High-profile hip-hop
Megan Thee Stallion has stolen the headlines in recent years. The 25-year-old rapper has collaborated with Beyoncé, and the track "WAP", which she co-released with Cardi B, is undoubtedly this year's most talked-about tune. With her brand-new album Good News she underlines the fact that she is one of the most important voices in hip-hop right now. The concert at Roskilde Festival will be her first in Denmark.

The hip-hop-loving crowd can also look forward to two forward-thinking rappers DaBaby and Doja Cat at next year's Roskilde Festival, and established showman Anderson .Paak is also in the line-up with his backing group The Free Nationals.

Head of Programme, Anders Wahrén, says:

"The most important task for us is always to be relevant. To have an eye on what is interesting next summer. We have re-booked an amount of artists from the 2020 line-up because they have remained relevant, and at the same time we are able to follow the very latest developments in the music and art scene."

"When you put Megan Thee Stallion on the poster together with Doja Cat and DaBaby, we emphasise that Roskilde Festival wants to be at the forefront when it comes to new rap. At the same time, there are some solid rock acts in today's announcement. The Strokes, HAIM and Deftones have all released new albums recently, which clearly shows that they are worth keeping an eye on."

Art and activism in a digital age
Today's announcement also features 12 artists from the arts & activism programme.

All 12 artists are chosen because they experiment in their own way and challenge traditional distinctions between genres and categories in art. In different ways, they develop the idea that free spaces can arise through dance, music, technology and visual art - often with a commentary on the surrounding society, for instance with special focus on digitization and data.

The Danish Centre for Cyber Wellness tackles the concept of data fatigue and offers to clean all festival-goers from the digital cookie trail they leave behind every day. Jacob Remin will send low-voltage electricity through people as part of a data detox ritual, and Elly Clarke, in the shape of drag identity #Sergina, sings songs about love, desire and loneliness in the digital age.

Roskilde Festival will take place from 26 June - 3 July 2021.

Full Festival Tickets for Roskilde Festival 2021 are sold out. In the new year, the remaining one-day tickets will be put up for sale.

Roskilde Festival is organised by Roskilde Festival Charity Society and is created every year by 30,000 volunteers. All profits from the festival are donated to humanitarian, non-profit and cultural work for the benefit of children and young people in particular. Since the beginning of the 70s, Roskilde Festival has donated over EUR 55 million.
