The Blueprint of an Office: Franck Genser Reimagines the Workspace

As September marks a return to work and familiar routines, Franck Genser considers the office through its most essential elements: a place to work, the right light, and thoughtful storage.

Designed and made in his Paris atelier, each piece brings together function with the materials and craftsmanship that define Genser's work. Marble, bronze and alabaster are paired with strong, sculptural forms, creating an office that feels considered without feeling overly formal.

THE DESK

The desk forms the foundation of the workspace, establishing the room's proportions, character, and sense of place. The CHUMTAK desk, one of Franck Genser's defining pieces. Its American walnut base is paired with a sfumato-lacquered top, while two interior drawers are lined with deep blue full-grain calfskin. Produced in a limited edition of seven, Chumtak brings together the precision of cabinetmaking with details that are discovered through use.

The BOUCLE desk takes a softer approach. Its curved silhouette contrasts with the straight lines of a traditional desk, allowing it to sit naturally in a study, library, or living space. Sculptural from every angle, it is as much a piece of furniture as it is a place to work.

The MINISTRE work table is a substantial marble table supported by patinated bronze legs. Generous in scale, it offers ample room to work, meet, draw, or spread out, while the contrast between stone and bronze lends the piece its distinctive presence.

THE LIGHT

If the desk establishes the workspace, lighting determines how it feels. And sometimes it is nice to bring some whimsy and fun into the space through sculptural lighting pieces.

The CUBE TRIO brings alabaster into the office in a quieter way. Hand-sculpted in the atelier, the stone softens the light and reveals its natural variations when illuminated. As a wall light, it also leaves the desk itself uncluttered.

At the other end of the spectrum is SPLASH, a monumental alabaster light sculpture from Genser's Cosmic collection. Composed of three elements, its form captures the movement of liquid hitting a wall-a playful interruption to the more serious conventions of the office. Each Splash is part of a series of unique pieces, turning an otherwise functional element of the room into something unexpected.

THE CHAIR

The chair completes the working arrangement, bringing comfort while adding another layer of form, material, and personality to the room.

The DÉCISION armchair, an iconic piece from the Franck Genser collection, draws inspiration from Ruhlmann's work and the contrast between modernity and tradition. Its construction finds balance in two pieces and four legs, sculpted from solid wood.

The TROMPETTE armchair, from the Saint Germain collection, takes a more playful approach. Original in its shape and joyful in its use of color, the chair is made from molded and lacquered composite and is available in a wide range of soft shades, bringing color and personality into the workspace.

Together, these pieces offer Franck Genser's vision of the modern office, where function and craftsmanship are considered with equal importance. From the desk and chair to the surrounding lighting, each element contributes to a workspace that feels both purposeful and personal.

Driven by a sensitive aesthetic, Franck Genser does not hesitate to blend different exceptional skills to create a piece. He particularly works with noble materials that will develop a patina over time, such as walnut, parchment, marble, and Japanese lacquer.

This unique approach results in objects brimming with emotion. They fit into a heritage perspective, serving as a current and future testimony of our era.
