Tierra, Aire y Mar:

FARO Barcelona Lights the Way Toward Circular Design

Barcelona-based design studio blends digital craft, circular materials, and poetic forms

in a new lighting collection by Héctor Serrano

FARO Barcelona presents Tierra, Aire y Mar, a lighting collection by Héctor Serrano that invites us to reconsider our relationship with the planet. Designed and produced in Barcelona, the collection is rooted in two essential principles: the desire to democratize 3D printing for large-scale design, and the urgency of creating products that are truly sustainable and circular.

Inspired by Earth, Sea, and Air, the elements that shape our planet, this collection serves as both a functional solution and a statement of intent. Nature does not generate waste. With Tierra, Aire y Mar, FARO reminds us that design can follow the same path.

Digital Craft with an Honest Soul

Each luminaire in the collection reflects a balance between advanced technology and material sincerity. Rather than masking the traces of the 3D printing process, the pieces celebrate them. The grooves, irregularities, and matte finishes reveal a production method that is transparent and respectful-free of molds, coatings, or post-processing.

This is digital craftsmanship: a new kind of making that combines efficiency with emotion. The forms are calm, timeless, and organically adaptable, designed to blend into architectural environments while quietly conveying deeper ecological messages.

Three Elements, Three Stories of Circularity

  • TIERRA - 3D-printed using a bioplastic blend of PLA and cellulose, both biodegradable and plant-based, Tierra features hive-like structures that reference pollination as the lifeblood of biodiversity. Its random, paper-like texture evokes terracotta and handmade surfaces, contrasting digital precision with craft-like warmth.

  • MAR - Made with a polypropylene composite sourced from 73-75% recycled fishing nets, Mar draws inspiration from sea urchins and marine forms. Its sea urchin-inspired forms link the object to its material origin, transforming ocean waste into durable, emotionally resonant design.

  • AIRE - Constructed from 100% recycled PETG, the most widely recyclable plastic, Aire features bubble-like volumes only achievable through additive manufacturing. Lightweight yet durable, the model illustrates the material's potential for infinite reuse, both in concept and in function.

Tierra, Aire y Mar challenges the conventional boundaries between mass production and craft, between technology and nature. In doing so, it reflects FARO Barcelona's evolving design philosophy: one where innovation is grounded in responsibility, and beauty is inseparable from impact.
