Invitation to the launch of the Nordic prime ministers' initiative Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges on 30 May

 
 
 
 

On 30 May 2017, the five Nordic prime ministers will launch the initiative Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges. The launch will take place in Bergen, Norway, as part of the meeting of the prime ministers and the Nordic Council of Ministers on 29-30 May.

 
 
 
 

All five prime ministers - Erna Solberg (Norway), Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Denmark), Bjarni Benediktsson (Iceland), Juha Sipilä (Finland) and Stefan Löfven (Sweden) - will be present for the launch.

 

We have invited three high-profile international speakers to air their views on the initiative, which is an important part of the Nordic countries' contribution to the UN's sustainability goals: Fadumo Qasim Dayib, Acting Country Manager of UN Women in Somalia (Somalia/Finland); Gunhild Stordalen, founder and President of EAT Foundation (Norway) and Connie Hedegaard (Denmark), former European Commissioner for Climate Action and Minister of Climate and Energy - see biographies below.

International demand for Nordic knowledge

The five Nordic governments are working together to drive progress toward the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This DKK 74 million initiative will present Nordic knowledge of green transition, gender equality at work and sustainable food and welfare solutions to a range of international forums.

 

The prime ministers will be available for one-on-one interviews during the boat trip to Austevoll (by prior agreement).

Bio - Gunhild A. Stordalen

Dr. Gunhild A. Stordalen is the founder and president of the EAT Foundation, established in 2011. She is a driving force in work to link climate, health and sustainability issues and to transform the global food system.

 

Gunhild Stordalen is a published scientist, a renowned public speaker and sits on several boards, including Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Lead Group, the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council (on the Future of Food Security and Agriculture), the ECOHZ Renewable Energy Foundation, BT Group's Committee for Sustainable and Responsible Business, the climate initiative DrawDown and the international advisory board of the SRC.

 

Bio - Fadumo Qasim Dayib

In 2016, Fadumo Dayib PhD became the first woman to run for president of Somalia. She is a social change activist, a public health and human rights expert and a development practitioner. She is acting Country Program Manager for UN Women, Somalia.

 

As a teenager, Dayib fled from Somalia with her two brothers and was granted asylum in Finland in 1990. Today, she holds several master's degrees in international public health. After gaining her Master's in Public Administration (Harvard University, 2015) she enrolled as a PhD fellow (Women, Peace, and Security) at the University of Helsinki.

 

Dayib has subsequently worked on issues surrounding democracy, human rights and public health for the United Nations in Somalia, Kenya, Liberia and Fiji, as well as in the private and public sectors in Finland.

 

Bio - Connie Hedegaard (TBC)
Connie Hedegaard was Minister for The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Danish Minister of Climate and Energy, and Danish Minister for Environment. From 2010 to 2014 she was European Commissioner for Climate Action. During her term Hedegaard led negotiations towards adoption of the EU 2030 Climate and Energy Framework and was responsible for the 2050 Roadmap for a low-carbon economy.

 

She currently holds several key positions in support of a low-carbon and green economy; among them Chair of the Board of the KR Foundation and Chair of the OECD Roundtable for Sustainable Development.
