Marianne Tiegen reimagines a 17th-century Parisian landmark:
A harmonious blend of heritage and modernity at Place des Vosges

In the heart of the Marais district, overlooking the historic Place des Vosges, Marianne Tiegen unveils a stunning residential project that is a meticulous restoration of an apartment within a 17th-century Heritage Landmark Building originally commissioned by King Henry IV. Under the vigilant oversight of the French Historical Heritage Architects department, Tiegen preserved the apartment's original volumes and detailing, honoring its storied past while introducing a contemporary narrative.

Despite its central location in bustling Paris, the apartment offers a serene retreat, a space where time seems to stand still. "Being here transcends time... beauty lies not in the thing itself but in the pattern of the shadow cast," Tiegen reflects.

Framed by soaring 17th-century windows overlooking Place des Vosges, this living room captures Marianne Tiegen's refined interplay of past and present. A Paul Evans sideboard and chrome lamps reflect the space's industrial accents, while soft, champagne-hued curtains and a linen sofa lend warmth. The striking portrait of Muhammad Ali anchors the room with a bold, modern edge, set against original herringbone parquet floors that ground the space in history.

In the kitchen and dining area, Marianne Tiegen combines historic grandeur with utilitarian elegance. Original plaster ceiling medallions and intricate cornices set a formal tone, while open walnut shelving and industrial sconces introduce a more grounded, functional sensibility. A sculptural pedestal dining table is surrounded by vintage bistro chairs, evoking the casual charm of a Parisian café. With natural textures, layered utility, and light-hearted personal touches, the space feels both refined and lived-in.

Playful yet serene, the children's bedroom and bathroom pair soft textures with vintage charm. A muted palette of creams and warm woods sets a calming backdrop, while mid-century furnishings and whimsical details evoke a sense of quiet nostalgia. The room feels both curated and comfortably designed to grow with its occupants while maintaining the refined aesthetic that runs throughout the home.

Marianne Tiegen's restoration of this 17th-century apartment on Place des Vosges is a masterclass in restrained elegance and thoughtful contrast. Seamlessly blending historic architecture with curated modernity, each room tells a layered story where French antiques meet American design, where industrial materials soften against romantic textures, and where icons of the past live comfortably among timeless forms. More than a renovation, this is a space that transcends time, offering beauty not just in what is seen, but in what is felt.
