The course will give teachers tools and methods in how to incorporate practise-oriented topics in academic subjects. This will strengthen the student’s motivation in education and teach them about environmental issues and solutions, and a relevant and updated knowledge of how to work with UN’s 17 World Goals in education.

There will be school visits where the participants will see and learn about environmental issues in education as well as the Danish school system, so as visits to different relevant places of interest in the Municipality of Middelfart, for example a walk through the Climate City of Middelfart, local companies and Bridge walking.

The participants will, during the course, gain knowledge of and work with three environmental issues from the framework of UN’s 17 World Goals:

  • Water
  • Energy
  • Circular economy

They will see examples of how we work with environmental solutions in Denmark and gain a variety of didactical methods of how they can prepare, undertake and evaluate teaching in these topics in each their subject.

The participants will have time to reflect upon their new knowledge, so that it will be transformed to their own academic objectives, culture and organization.

The course will be run by lead persons with a great knowledge of educational methology and didactics.

They will be in close contact with the coordinator of the sending institution, as well as emphasize European collaboration through international group work and knowledge of collaboration via E-twinning.

Evaluation through reflections and ideas will happen throughout the course.

All participants receive a diploma of attendance after the course.

There will be time for self-study and networking.

 

Objectives and competencies acquired:

 

The course is designed to give teachers new methods, tools and inspiration towards an environmental aspect in education based solutions of problems caused by climate change focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation.

By attending the course, the participants will develop competencies of planning, undertaking and evaluating lessons focusing on the student’s academic, personal and social skills to work with problem-orientated topics within the subject, develop 21st century skills and engage in collaborative relations.

The participant will develop the following skills:

  • Awareness of environmental education in both primary,  secondary and upper secondary classes'
  • Theoretical and practical skills in how to create motivating lesson plans
  • Climate education for all subjects focusing on green solutions
  • Didactical and pedagogical skills such as innovative teaching methods
  • Intercultural competencies such as networking, language and understanding of other school systems
  • Awareness of working with non measureable and non measurable competencies such as 21st century skills
  • There will be evaluation rounds during the course, where participants will reflect about their own learning.

The course is very relevant for all STEM teachers. We will organize the course on basis of the background and interest of the participants and we also open the course for teachers with other subjects.

The course will be taught in English. It is an advantage to understand English.

After the Course:

We offer optional mentoring after the course has ended to enable the participants to be advised, when they return home.

The participants will evaluate the overall content and their own development after the course.

 

Program for the week:

The course is five full days – travelling in the weekends.

The participants are introduced to three different themes during the five days.

  • New knowledge
  • Reflection of new knowledge in a didactical frame
  • Adjustment of didactical frame into own practice.

There will be lectures by experts as well as teacher-to-teacher discussions run by our Climate Counsellors from a variety of schools in Middelfart.

All themes will be run through the following:

 

1. Theme - Water

Climate change and water - Presentation about the topic.

The participants gain theoretical knowledge behind the thoughts and how we deal with the challenges in our municipality.

Visit the Climate City and Middelfart. An engineer shows climate solutions in the streets regarding drains for massive amounts of rain.

 

2. Theme - Energy

Climate and energy - Presentation about the topic.

The participants gain theoretical knowledge behind the thoughts and how we deal with the challenges in our municipality.

Visit a local power plant. A local citizen tells about thoughts and collaboration behind and how it improves sustainability and green energy.

 

3. Theme– Circular economy

Circular economy - Presentation about the topic.

The participants gain theoretical knowledge behind the thoughts of circular economy.

Visit at the local recycling plant. An economist guides around and tells about climate solutions and sustainability regarding garbage sorting.

All three topics will be followed by:

Own didactical framework:

Make your own didactical plan from the theme and issues presented. You can invite external partners as well, for example your new European network, local companies and organizations.

 Didactical reflection:

  • How can you and your students work with the issue in your own curriculum?
  • Which subjects will be used to process the issue?
  • Which competencies will be strengthened - 21st century skills?
